James Brown said it: Get up, get down & get involved! Marcel Vogel wanted to get involved in all things music from an early age on. Compiling tapes from his mother’s record collection, being addicted to Yo MTV Raps and this whole fantastic world of Hip Hop. Trying to be a B-Boy, trying to be a rapper, a poet and a writer. But DJing stuck and how it stuck. Practice sessions forced the whole village to listen due to open windows. Marcel soon became part of a school of DIY people that are Djing, organising parties, setting up labels and releasing the music that is missing in the records stores.
First parties saw him playing Chicago & Disco House but a couple of factors had a heavy influence on his more organic and free style of Djing for which he is known nowadays: Theo Parrish, Jazzanova’s Alex Barck & Madvilliany. Baptized as a regular dancer, the German roamer has taken the neccessary steps to follow the call of his musical soul. He is more than ever a passionate DJ and record Digger with an ear for the unheard soulful groove between disco, rare groove and house.
He wanted to make and release music as long as he can remember, his first independent moves became the LEGACY parties that he hosted as a resident in Berlin from 2003-2007, becoming already a hub for everything Disco related.
After a 3 year stint in Switzerland he moved to Amsterdam to connect with a lot of soulful institutions and study audio engineering. At the same time he founded the now renowed disco / edit / chicago house label Lumberjacks in Hell, This small numbers limited edition label has a happy and dedicated following among leftfield and disco DJ’s around the world. After a couple of his own releases the label became a hub for icons like Traxx, Jamie 326, Rahaan and the small hit ALL AROUND THE WATCHTOWER by Rayko, to which marcel contributed the B-side (with his alias Em Vee).
Talking of getting involved. It’s 2013. Lumberjacks is 10 proud vinyl releases in and coming up is the label’s first all star compilation. And even more exciting, marcel is about to release his first own productions on his new label Intimate Friends.
